Digital Delacroix now has its own website. The project is described as a unique digital humanities initiative, merging art history, 3D modelling and artificial intelligence to examine and conserve Eugène Delacroix’s monumental ceiling artwork within the French National Assembly.
The project is led by Sorbonne Université alongside the French National Assembly, with the support of the Schmidt Foundation. It pursues several interconnected objectives: acquiring ultra high-resolution imaging — more than 10,000 images — of the ceiling; building an interactive virtual experience; using AI to distinguish between Delacroix’s own brushwork and that of his workshop assistants; investigating pigments and composition through non-invasive analysis; digitally restoring missing artworks; and studying Delacroix’s correspondence for new scholarly findings.
The project represents a multidisciplinary leap into the future of cultural heritage, and the new site invites visitors to explore its work at delacroix.sorbonne-universite.fr.
